Insurance for Domestic Partners

The companies the currently allow domestic partners to be covered on the same private health insurance policy include Aetna, Connecticare and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. This means that with those three companies, a couple with or without the benefit of a civil union or marriage can be insured on the same policy. A domestic partnership consisting of two males, two females or a male and a female can be insured on the same policy.

The requirements for being declared a domestic partnership are similar with the three companies. Connecticare’s Domestic Partnership form asks that you attest to the following:

  1. We are at least 18 years of age and mentally competent to consent to contract;
  2. We are not legally married to each other and neither of us is legally married to any other person;
  3. We are not related by blood to any degree that would bar marriage in our state of residence;
  4. We have been committed to this relationship for at least 12 months.
  5. We reside together in the same residence and have so resided for the last 12 months;
  6. We intend to reside together in the same residence indefinitely;
  7. We are each other’s sole domestic partner and intend to remain so indefinitely;
  8. We are jointly responsible for each other’s common welfare and financial obligations.

If you do a little research on domestic partner insurance benefits, you will see that in many cases that there is no benefit to having both partners on the same health insurance policy. This is due to the way companies determine their rates. Some companies will determine the premium for each member of the family and then add those rates together to determine the rate for that family’s policy. With these companies, the rates for two separate policies for each domestic partner will be the same as the rates for one policy that covers them both.

However, with some companies the pricing is based on the age of the younger spouse or domestic partner. In these cases if the two partners are in different age brackets, they may pay a higher premium than they would if they were on separate policies.

Where there are more than two people on the policy, there is usually a difference in how the deductible and “out-of-pocket-maximum” or “stop loss” is applied if three or more family members have significant expenses in the same calendar year. With most policies, a family insured on the same policy can pay a maximum of two deductibles during the same calendar year. The same applies to the “out-of-pocket-maximum.”

What this means is that if three family members are involved in a car accident and have major injuries, only two deductibles will need to be met if they are all insured on the same policy. This also applies to separate car accidents or separate illnesses that occur to three or more family members during the same calendar year.

You may want to purchase from a company that recognizes domestic partnership because you want to support companies that made that decision. However, having separate policies may not cost you more.

The good news is the three companies that we like because of the quality of their coverage, their networks and financial stability all recognize domestic partnerships in their Connecticut private health insurance policies.

    Today US offered domestic partner benefits either homosexual or unmarried heterosexual partners.Unmarried opposite sex partners and same-sex partners are defined and is included as domestic partnership.
    For domestic partners the benefit offered the same benefits as married couple gets.But most common benefits that was offered is dental,health and vision insurances.
    In 1996 there was Act who defines marriage to man and a woman and gives each state an option on legalizing same sex marriage,Though there was no state currently recognized same sex marriages but not likely to San Francisco and New York.The sad thing is same-sex partners cannot be treated as spouses for federal tax and employment benefits.
