COBRA forces most companies with 20 or more employees make COBRA coverage available to former employees. This option allows these former employees to continue their group medical insurance on a temporary basis.
As a general rule you can keep your COBRA health insurance plan for up to 18 months. The good news about COBRA health coverage is that when offered you can at least temporarily continue your health insurance through COBRA. Eligibility for insurance lasts for (usually) an 18 month period even if you have preexisting conditions, the bad news is that C.O.B.R.A. is expensive and for most people will end in a year and a half. So even though you may be eligible for cobra, it may not be the best option for you.
Since most pre-existing conditions get worse, it's safer to apply for a long term Connecticut health insurance plan as early as possible because you can keep a a permanent private health insurance policy until you become eligible for Medicare. Some plans can be coupled with tax deductible a Health Savings Accounts or HSA that can lower your taxes.
